About

I love being a maker!

Ever since I can remember I have been tinkering with computers, pulling apart electronics and figuring out what makes things tick.

It’s probably of little surprise to anybody that I eventually ended up pursuing a career in engineering.

I am now a successful project manager for an engineering company in the south of England and work with an amazing team of engineers. I love my job as it introduces me to new engineering challenges each day.

However, I really enjoy getting my hands dirty and creating something entirely by myself.  I also live for sharing what I’ve made and hopefully inspire or help a few others to do the same.

In recent years I’ve started to learn woodworking and am really enjoying it especially some more specific areas such as woodturning and scrollsawing.  A big regret from growing up was not listening to my father; a carpenter of 35 years and learning what I could.  I am however more than making up for it now calling him and pestering him for advice when I need it!

With my newfound love of woodworking and other skills I really enjoy making “unusual projects” that some consider a little mad but awlways have a love of engineering and modern techniques.  Hence I’ve adopted the alias of “The Woodgineer”

My YouTube Channel

In 2017 I started a YouTube channel to share my love of making stuff especially with wood and I had a fantastic time doing it!  The YouTube community is simply the best and I’ve found myself a small but engaging group of followers which is growing organically.

Things have gone great but this year and beyond I’m going to continue with the making and I must warn you, things are going to get weird!

I realised that making “normal” making videos talking about how something is made isn’t my style.  I have to inject some humour, showmanship and craziness into my builds.

I’ve got a million ideas for things I want to make all bubbling up in my noggin and these creative juices need an outlet or I’m likely to explode.

Expect to see reviews, vlogs, collaborations with other makers and some crazy builds coming to the channel!

This Blog

It made sense to make this blog to accompany the channel and it has grown into much more.

From here I can go into more details with some of my builds and have created a store where I can sell some of my projects without the constraints that places like Etsy and eBay have.

Work with Me!

I have a small but growing audience of makers, crafters and tinkerers between my YouTube channel and all the other social media platforms.

If the product or service is relevant to my audience I am also happy to discuss sponsorship and have worked with many big companies including CAT, Gorilla Glue, Starbond Adhesives, Banggood, Worx Tools and Evolution Tools so far.

If you would like to get in touch to discuss working with me please email me at contact@thewoodgineer.com

Buying a house? Completed it mate! Few months ag Buying a house? Completed it mate!
Few months ago we thought we’d had the rug pulled out from under us as our landlord wanted to sell. The home we’d made (not to mention my workshop) that we eventually wanted to buy was in a perfect location and somewhere we could happily spend the rest of our lives.
Thanks to some hard work by my lovely wife and help from family we’ve managed to convince the bank we’re responsible people (I know right? 😂) and get a mortgage.
Today it’s all ours along with the security that comes with not renting and we’re already pondering all the things we can do to it.
(And yes, workshop expansion is on the list there somewhere)

Then after getting to know them all, perhaps bonding over near death experiences at @realcolinfurze workshop I realised we are all the odd ones and they are just simply amazingly nice people 🥰
Thanks again to Colin and your misses for hosting, the workshop and tunnel tour as well as playing with the cool toys and thanks to everyone for making feel like part of the fam especially @xrobotsuk for bringing me 😎

Also massive thanks to the @vectricltd team for having me on their stand and all the love they give out to the maker community. It’s been fun chatting to people there all weekend about CNCs and playing with the @onefinitycnc machine. (Though it did feel like cheating on my lovely @ooznest workbee but you know, different postcode….)

Day 12 of May for Makers “Favourite Part” He Day 12 of May for Makers “Favourite Part”
Hehe. I'll behave 😉
My favourite projects are ones that combine woodworking with electronics and the "brains" of most of them is an arduino specifically an ESP8266. These tiny modules are cheap (as little as £2), have enough pins for most things you want to connect and even have onboard wifi!
Coding on them is just like any normal Arduino and 32kb of memory is more than enough for simple projects so whatever you can think of, you can connect to wifi. Pot plants, cat flaps, toasters, pillows you name it….
ESP8266 ALL THE THINGS!

Day 11 of May for Makers “Happy Accident” I m Day 11 of May for Makers “Happy Accident”
I made about 12 hexagon shaped bug hotels from recycled materials (mostly from my daughters old bed and pallet wood) but when you add up the time it takes to make them, you are looking at a price of £30 each if you want to make any kind of money so unsurprisingly these have never sold well at craft fairs.
But…wait… whats this? They are just about the right size for an automata I'm currently working on and potentially could be used for others!
Nice shape, recycled materials and a big open part so you can see the mechanism.
Score!
